In first pageant in 40 years, NBU Student is "Miss Kalimpong"'


NISHA CHETTRI, SNS, KALIMPONG. 20 DECEMBER: Twenty four year old Anisha Tamang of 8th mile in the town was today crowned Miss Kalimpong-2017.
In the beauty pageant organized for the first time in the town after 40 years, Avishna Raj Pradhan, of 10th Mile was adjudged the first runner up, while Priyana Pradhan,21, of 8.5 Mile was the second runner up.
Miss International India, Rewati Chettri, was one of the judges, along with actor and model of Sikkim, Sonam Barfungpaa, Nepali filmmaker and director Tulsi Ghimirey, in the pageant organized by 'Spot the Trend,' in association with 'Mani Trust'
"We need supportive parents in order to achieve anything in life. My biggest inspiration is my mother," Miss Tamang said after the final round that was held in the Centenary Hall of the Girls' High School here. "I was confident since day one, and I deserved the crown," she added.
While Anisha is pursuing her masters in the North Bengal University Avishna is a class-12 student at Rockval Academy in Kalimpong,and Priyana is studying management in a college in town.
Organisers said the pageant aimed at giving Kalimpong district a motivational and inspirational figure. "The show also spoke loud on feminism, culture, tradition, and art, while it was not only fashion," they said.
The auditions for the show were started on 17 November that went on for three days. The board members of Miss Kalimpong contest had set an age limit of 18 to 25 years, while the desired height was 5 feet 4 inches and above.
The CEO of the show, Gyalchenla Bhutia, had earlier said that they have affiliated on with Miss North-East, and that the girls who perform well here will be chosen for the North-East contest too.
The board members of the pageant are artists who have worked in cities in different backgrounds like stylists and photographers, and who all are now based in Kalimpong.
The 15 contestants who had been selected for the finale were introduced to the public on 10 December at their promotional event in the town.
Priyanka Veronica Lama. the official stylist of the show, who trained the girls and polished their raw talents, told The Statesman that everybody had put their heart and soul in the show.
Asked about the importance of such shows in our society, she said, "I believe Miss Kalimpong is important for the society today to break the stereotypical thin king of people who have towards beauty pageants.
Our people need to know that pageants are not just about beautiful faces but skin deep. It's about empowering women, giving them a platform for what they are best at."
Yojna Pradhan, the fitness trainer for the show, feels that Miss Kalimpong is not just about good clothes, catwalks, and makeovers. "It is more about creating a motivational and inspirational figure in our town," she said.
